One of the earliest memories of my childhood was the eruption of Mount St. Helens.

It occurred on Sunday, May 18th 1980, 20 seconds after 8:32 a.m. PDT as a result of an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.1 one mile directly below the mountain causing a massive landslide of the entire north face of the volcano.

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Mount St. Helens with my father. The destruction even thirty-two years later was obviously apparent, but the diversity and amount of flora and fauna existing there now would rival some of the world’s best coral reefs. It was truly an amazing experience that I will never forget. Thanks Dad!

Remember today for 57 people that died in the biggest volcanic event in this country’s history.
