Meteorological Preparedness

Here is an interesting story that can be of value to my fellow f-stoppers and worth a good laugh to everyone else.

With nothing planned on my schedule for Monday, I was looking forward to hiking up into the woods and spending some time with my camera and the forest with no set agenda.  Part of photographing nature effectively means accepting all of the things that go along with our natural environment.  This list can include; ticks, leeches, sunburn, thorns, poison ivy, mosquitoes, spiders, sharp rocks, snakes, sand, mud…and the weather.

Monday’s weather forecast called for scattered showers throughout the morning and early afternoon.  Continue reading »

Occupy May Day – New York City

Tuesday morning I had the opportunity to go into New York City with my friend Dennis Osorio and photograph Occupy Wall Street’s protests throughout Bryant Park and surrounding areas of mid-town Manhattan.

The “Occupy May Day” event was scheduled for Tuesday to coincide with May Day, a globally celebrated International Workers’ Day.  This holiday began in Chicago at the end of the 1800’s when organized labor unions became strong enough to demand an eight hour workday. Continue reading »

Photographic Services for Real Estate Professionals

With spring here and summer right around the corner the peak season for buying and selling houses is in full swing.  The added benefit of an improving economy has spurred resurgence in the market for residential homes as well as commercial buildings and property.

I offer custom professional photographic services for Realtors and Property Managers looking to present their listings to perspective buyers.  Often the first impression a person gets of a home or building comes from the images they see through MLS listings or printed media.  Any marketing professional will agree with the adage – “That if you want to sell something, you must first make it look good!”

A New Gallery

We have added a new gallery titled “Portraits and People” to the webpage.  Here you will find samples of portrait work along with random images of people doing…people things!  The images had been previously found in the “assorted” gallery but there are enough of them now to give them their own home. Click here to visit now and come back often.

Your support is, as always, appreciated!

California Redwood Garden

Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit an artist in the Catskills who has an entire field of giant California Redwood tree trunks that he carved and sculpted by hand.  These trunks were by-products  of the logging industry in California during the early nineteen hundreds.  Each sculpture is ten to fifteen feet tall and they are arranged in rows that makes you think of Stonehenge or Rapa Nui.  These tree trunks could be thousands of years old and each capable of weights into the tons.  As a former resident of Northern California, I have fond memories of these trees and it is nice to see their beauty restored and made timeless by the artist.   I will hopefully be revisiting soon and have some ideas about future projects here.  I will have more images posted throughout the week including some macro and close up frames.

Autumn Begins Tomorrow

The official start of the fall season starts tomorrow and while it lasts for three months, the “prime” time is shorter than most people think.  The large amounts of rain we had the second half of summer will contribute to what should make for some amazing colors when the foliage begins to turn.  The peak of the colors however, only last for a few weeks or for as little as ten days.  I am excited for the new season and I have some interesting projects planned.  I was photographing up near New Paltz, New York on Monday and you could already start to see some reds and oranges in the trees. I also discovered a new location near New Paltz that has some amazing potential.  I will be following the weather and the colors closely and hope everyone is also thinking about fall portrait work.  My daughter has me thinking about leaves, pumpkins, hayrides, Halloween costumes and all of the portrait opportunities that Autumn provides. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or ideas.  Back to School portraits also qualify for 10% off shooting rates from now through Thanksgiving with mention of this article.  Thank You for visiting.

A note on “Abandoned”

After several emails and questions, I would like to address several points on the topic of “Abandoned Buildings and Locations.”

In recent years the amount of structures and locations that have become abandoned has increased exponentially.  This has spawned an entire subculture of self titled “Urban Explorers”; people who range from Artists and Photographers to Thrill-seekers and Vandals.   It is a very mixed bag of folks and while I do not consider myself an “Urban Explorer”, there are times when I photograph in and around locations that are clearly marked NO ACCESS.  There is now a need for me to make certain clarifications as to my standings, having received several emails asking for the locations of these places and even directions as to how to gain entry.  I never give this information out and have been asked repeatedly as to “Why not?”

As Summer Fades and Autumn Approaches

With summer beginning to wind down I am eagerly looking forward to the upcoming season.  Fall is my favorite season for the better weather, diminished crowds at local parks, less cars on the freeways and for improved conditions for photography.  The wildlife is still around, and usually more active preparing for winter.  The foliage here in the northeast becomes vibrant beyond description,  the days get a little shorter and with decreased humidity, there is less haze in the air.  This extends the opportunity for “good light” not just for landscape and nature photography, but also for outdoor portrait work.

I am currently booking appointments for on location portrait work and for custom “back to school” portraits.  With mention of this post, you qualify for 10% off all location shooting prices from now through ThanksgivingContinue reading »

Intro to Panoramics

Last weekend, during a visit from Oregon, I learned some great panoramic techniques from my father, Jack Graham.

After explaining image stitching and crop ratios for composition, he showed me some tips on equipment setup; leveling your tripod, white balance settings, lens/focal length selection, et cetera.  We then captured several images that we stitched and processed within a few minutes. The whole process was much easier to accomplish than I’d previously experienced.  It was a fun afternoon with him, almost like a “micro-workshop” or a collaborative effort by Graham

You can check out an extremely informative article on my Dad’s blog here.

I have created a new gallery that I hope to add to throughout the upcoming weeks. …Stay tuned!

The Hellhole

The day begins with a 200 foot rappel down into a canyon that some of the most experienced climbers in New England lovingly refer to as “The Hellhole.” I’m thinking “piece of cake, no problem, child’s play” …NOT!

With the help of my friend, Jason Hurwitz, and his clan of hill-spiders, not only did I come out victorious and unharmed, but with one of the best experiences of my photographic career and something I will remember my whole life!
